He calls for a new social movement to humanize and civilize the \u201ctechnology revolution.\u201d\u00a0 The FAZ asked me to write a response to Mr. Schulz, published today, that you can read <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/feuilleton\/debatten\/militaerisch-informationelle-bedrohung-die-neuen-massenausforschungswaffen-12798822.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">here in German<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/feuilleton\/debatten\/ueberwachung\/shoshana-zuboff-s-response-to-martin-schulz-the-new-weapons-of-mass-detection-12799987.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">here in English<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this essay, largely drawn from my new work in <i>The Summons <\/i>(forthcoming, Public Affairs, 2015), I begin to <strong>theorize the emergence of a new concentration of institutional power that I call the\u00a0 \u201cmilitary-informational complex.\u201d<\/strong> It expresses the convergence of interests and practices shared by Big Tech and the NSA (and its cohorts around the world).\u00a0 The military-informational complex develops techniques to \u201cweaponize\u201d our data in order to produce new \u201cweapons of mass detection.\u201d With respect to these weapons we are both the bullet and the bullseye.\u00a0 The military-informational complex stands to inherit the mantle of Eisenhower\u2019s military-industrial complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In light of this new institutional configuration,<strong> it is ludicrous to think that Big Tech can champion our interests in privacy and freedom.<\/strong> It\u2019s equally obvious that our governments are unlikely to champion consumer sovereignty by regulating or overseeing Big Tech\u2019s intrusive excesses.\u00a0 How can we expect them to regulate the companies that supply their information arsenal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Technology is merely the Trojan horse that ushers in these new forms of secret power. The surveillance paradigm arises from a convergence of business choices and political inclinations. Technology is the camouflage, not the driver. <strong>That means our responses must be political and social.
